HPA Axis Reactivity

Meaning

HPA Axis Reactivity quantifies the magnitude and speed of the physiological response of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, primarily measured by the release of cortisol, in direct response to a physical or psychological stressor. High reactivity signifies an exaggerated or overly sensitive stress response, which can lead to chronic catabolism and metabolic strain. Conversely, blunted reactivity indicates an inadequate or fatigued response, suggesting potential adrenal exhaustion or severe HPA axis dysfunction.
