HPA Axis Monitoring

Meaning

HPA Axis Monitoring is the clinical assessment and longitudinal tracking of the functional status of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, which is the body’s central neuroendocrine system for regulating the stress response. This monitoring typically involves measuring the rhythmic secretion of cortisol and DHEA over a 24-hour period using non-invasive methods like salivary or dried urine testing. The primary clinical goal is to identify patterns of dysregulation, such as flattened diurnal rhythms or hyper/hypo-cortisolism, which are indicative of chronic stress adaptation or adrenal fatigue.
