HPA Axis Methylation

Meaning

The epigenetic modification process, specifically the addition of methyl groups to DNA or associated histone proteins, that directly influences the gene expression of components within the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. This methylation status controls the transcriptional activity of genes encoding receptors for glucocorticoids (GR), mineralocorticoids (MR), and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Differential methylation patterns are a key mechanism by which early life stress or chronic adult stress can lead to long-term dysregulation of the stress response system.
