HPA Axis Down-Regulation

Meaning

The clinical and physiological process of deliberately decreasing the activity and responsiveness of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the body’s central stress response system. Down-regulation is necessary when chronic psychological or physiological stress has led to HPA axis hyperactivity, resulting in persistently elevated cortisol levels and subsequent negative health consequences. The goal is to restore a healthy, rapid-return-to-baseline stress response profile.
