HPA Axis Disinhibition

Meaning

HPA Axis Disinhibition describes a pathological clinical state where the normal, negative feedback mechanisms regulating the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis become compromised or overridden. This results in the excessive, prolonged, and often inappropriately timed secretion of stress hormones, primarily cortisol, due to a failure of the pituitary and hypothalamus to properly detect and respond to circulating glucocorticoid levels. This lack of inhibitory control perpetuates a state of chronic physiological stress, leading to allostatic overload.
