HPA Axis Deactivation

Meaning

HPA Axis Deactivation refers to the physiological process of suppressing the activity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, the body’s central stress response system, following the resolution of a stressor or during periods of rest and recovery. This deactivation is the essential negative feedback loop where high levels of cortisol signal the hypothalamus and pituitary to cease the release of CRH and ACTH, respectively. Efficient deactivation is critical for preventing the detrimental effects of chronic hypercortisolemia and allowing the body to return to a state of allostatic balance.
