HPA Axis De-Sensitization

Meaning

A clinical objective focused on restoring appropriate sensitivity to the glucocorticoid receptors within the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, particularly following a period of chronic, unremitting stress. Chronic high cortisol exposure can lead to receptor downregulation and resistance, causing a failure of the normal negative feedback loop. De-sensitization aims to normalize the HPA axis response, allowing for a healthy, measured cortisol release during acute stress and a rapid return to baseline. This restoration is crucial for hormonal balance and systemic health.
