HPA Axis Coregulation

Meaning

HPA Axis Coregulation is the reciprocal process within a close dyadic relationship, such as a partnership, where the activity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis of one individual influences and is simultaneously influenced by the HPA axis activity of the other. This phenomenon manifests as synchronized patterns in cortisol release, especially during shared stressful or relaxing experiences. It is a key measure of physiological linkage and emotional attunement between partners. Effective coregulation is vital for maintaining a healthy stress response in both individuals.
