HPA Axis Attenuation

Meaning

HPA Axis Attenuation refers to the controlled, physiological process of reducing the hyperactivity or over-responsiveness of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the body’s central stress response system. The goal of attenuation is to restore appropriate negative feedback sensitivity and decrease the chronic, excessive secretion of stress hormones, particularly cortisol. This clinical objective is essential for transitioning the body from a state of chronic alarm to one of homeostatic resilience. Effective attenuation mitigates the systemic damage associated with prolonged allostatic load.
