HPA Axis Adaptation

Meaning

HPA Axis Adaptation describes the dynamic, long-term adjustments in the function and responsiveness of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis in response to chronic or repeated psychological or physiological stressors. This process involves changes in the set points of the axis’s components, including receptor density and hormone production capacity. Successful adaptation maintains allostasis, while maladaptation can lead to states of hypocortisolism or hypercortisolism, contributing to stress-related pathologies and endocrine fatigue.
