HP-GH Axis

Meaning

An abbreviation for the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Growth Hormone Axis, a critical neuroendocrine pathway that regulates somatic growth, metabolism, and body composition throughout the lifespan. This axis begins with the hypothalamus releasing Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) and Somatostatin, which then act on the anterior pituitary to control the secretion of Growth Hormone (GH). GH subsequently acts on target tissues, primarily the liver, to stimulate the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), which mediates many of GH’s anabolic effects. This complex system is vital for cellular repair and energy balance.
