Meaning

Host Cell Proteins, or HCPs, are a heterogeneous group of protein impurities that are inadvertently generated and carried over from the host organism or cell line used during the large-scale manufacturing of biopharmaceutical products. These process-related contaminants are endogenous to the production cells, such as E. coli or Chinese Hamster Ovary cells, and are distinct from the desired therapeutic protein. Although purification processes remove the vast majority of these impurities, residual trace amounts inevitably remain in the final drug product. Their presence must be rigorously monitored and controlled as they are considered a critical quality attribute that can impact patient safety and drug efficacy.
