Hormone Suppression Therapy

Meaning

Hormone suppression therapy is a clinical intervention designed to intentionally reduce the production or block the action of specific endogenous hormones in the body, typically to treat hormone-sensitive conditions or diseases. This therapeutic strategy is commonly employed in endocrinology and oncology, such as using GnRH agonists to suppress sex hormones in prostate or breast cancer, or utilizing aromatase inhibitors to block estrogen synthesis. The objective is to achieve a targeted hypo-hormonal state to halt or reverse disease progression.
