Hormone Recycling

Meaning

Hormone Recycling is a biological process involving the reuse or reprocessing of steroid hormones, primarily within target cells, after they have bound to their intracellular receptors. Instead of immediate degradation, the hormone-receptor complex can sometimes dissociate, allowing the free hormone to re-bind to another receptor or the receptor to be re-sensitized for future signaling. This mechanism is distinct from the general metabolic clearance of hormones and contributes to the overall efficiency and sustained nature of endocrine signaling within tissues. It suggests a more nuanced and economical use of active hormonal compounds at the cellular level.
