Hormone Receptor Antagonist

Meaning

A Hormone Receptor Antagonist is a substance that binds to a specific hormone receptor but, critically, does not induce the conformational change necessary for receptor activation. By occupying the receptor site, the antagonist effectively blocks the binding of the natural hormone or an agonist, thereby preventing the initiation of the normal biological signal. These molecules are clinically utilized to counteract the effects of hormone excess or to selectively block undesirable hormonal actions on specific target tissues, such as in the treatment of certain cancers.
