Hormone Precursors

Meaning

Hormone Precursors are specific chemical compounds, typically cholesterol-derived steroids or certain amino acids, that function as the biochemical raw materials from which the body synthesizes its active, signaling hormones. These molecules are generally less potent or biologically inactive until they undergo one or more final enzymatic conversions within the endocrine glands or peripheral target tissues. They represent a fundamental upstream point of regulation in the entire steroidogenesis cascade. Utilizing precursors can offer a physiological approach to modulating downstream hormone levels.
