Hormone Add-Back Therapy

Meaning

Hormone Add-Back Therapy is a specialized clinical strategy involving the controlled co-administration of small, physiological doses of sex steroids, typically estrogen and a progestin, alongside a primary drug that severely suppresses endogenous hormone production. This therapeutic approach is most commonly utilized to counteract the significant, undesirable side effects of profound hormone deprivation, such as the bone loss and vasomotor symptoms caused by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) agonist therapy. The primary objective is to preserve skeletal health and quality of life while maintaining the therapeutic efficacy of the primary treatment.
