Hormone Acuity

Meaning

The precision, sensitivity, and effectiveness with which target cells and tissues recognize and respond to circulating hormones. It encompasses the density, affinity, and proper functioning of hormone receptors, as well as the efficiency of the downstream intracellular signaling cascades. High hormone acuity ensures that a given hormone concentration elicits an optimal physiological effect, maximizing biological impact. Diminished acuity, or receptor resistance, requires higher hormone levels for the same effect.
