Hormonal Withdrawal Syndrome

Meaning

Hormonal Withdrawal Syndrome describes a constellation of physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms that can occur following the abrupt cessation or rapid tapering of exogenous hormone administration, particularly after prolonged use. This syndrome is a consequence of the body’s temporarily impaired ability to resume adequate endogenous hormone production, often due to suppression of the native endocrine axis by the external source. Symptoms are highly variable but can include fatigue, mood disturbances, hot flashes, and pain, reflecting the sudden deficit in the previously maintained hormone levels. Careful clinical management involves a slow, monitored withdrawal to allow the native endocrine system to recover its function.
