Hormonal Precursor

Meaning

A substance, typically a prohormone or a simpler molecule, that serves as the immediate or foundational chemical starting material from which the body synthesizes a biologically active hormone. These precursors are essential intermediates in the complex steroidogenesis and peptide synthesis pathways that govern the endocrine system. Cholesterol, for example, is the obligate precursor for all steroid hormones, while certain amino acids are precursors for thyroid and catecholamine hormones. Their availability is a critical rate-limiting factor in endogenous hormone production.
