Hormonal IUD

Meaning

A Hormonal IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small, T-shaped plastic contraceptive device inserted into the uterus that continuously releases a synthetic progestin hormone, typically levonorgestrel, to prevent pregnancy. This long-acting reversible contraceptive method is highly effective and works primarily by inducing localized endometrial changes and thickening cervical mucus, which impedes sperm migration. While primarily used for contraception, its localized hormone delivery mechanism also offers therapeutic benefits for conditions like heavy menstrual bleeding and certain forms of hormonal imbalance.
