Hormonal Fluid Retention

Meaning

Hormonal fluid retention, or hormone-mediated edema, is the excessive accumulation of interstitial fluid within the body’s tissues resulting from the direct or indirect influence of circulating endocrine factors. This condition is often observed during specific physiological states, such as the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or in individuals undergoing certain hormone replacement therapies. It is clinically important to distinguish this condition from fluid retention caused by primary cardiac or renal dysfunction.
