Hormonal Fat Distribution

Meaning

The pattern of adipose tissue accumulation and mobilization throughout the body that is significantly influenced and regulated by the endocrine system. Sex hormones, glucocorticoids, and insulin are major determinants of whether fat is stored in the gynoid (pear-shaped) or android (apple-shaped/visceral) depots. Changes in hormonal profiles, such as those occurring during aging or disease, lead to clinically observable shifts in body fat partitioning.
