Hormonal Contraception Effects

Meaning

Hormonal contraception effects refer to the systemic physiological and biochemical changes induced in a female patient by the clinical administration of exogenous progestins and/or estrogens to prevent conception. These pharmacological agents primarily function by suppressing the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) axis, which consequently inhibits ovulation and alters the cervical and endometrial environment. Beyond their contraceptive efficacy, these effects can include alterations in lipid metabolism, changes in coagulation factors, modulation of mood, and significant suppression of circulating levels of endogenous sex hormones.
