Hormonal Axis Plasticity

Meaning

Hormonal Axis Plasticity refers to the inherent capacity of the interconnected endocrine axes, such as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) or Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) systems, to structurally and functionally adapt their output in response to chronic physiological or environmental stressors. This plasticity allows the body to maintain allostasis, a state of stability through change, by recalibrating hormone production and feedback loops. A high degree of plasticity indicates a resilient endocrine system capable of swiftly returning to optimal balance after perturbation.
