Hormonal Autonomy

Meaning

Hormonal Autonomy refers to a state in which an endocrine gland or tissue produces and secretes hormones independently of the normal regulatory feedback mechanisms, typically involving the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. This is a pathological condition, signifying a loss of control within the complex neuroendocrine axis, often resulting in excessive or unregulated hormone production. Clinical examples include autonomous thyroid nodules or certain types of adrenal adenomas that secrete hormones without central stimulation.
