Hormesis Science

Meaning

Hormesis Science is the study of the biphasic dose-response phenomenon where a substance or environmental factor that is inhibitory or toxic at high doses proves to be stimulatory or beneficial at low, sub-toxic doses. In the context of human physiology and longevity, this principle is applied through controlled, intermittent stressors, such as specific forms of exercise, temporary caloric restriction, or thermal exposure. The clinical objective is to trigger endogenous protective and repair mechanisms, leading to an adaptive overcompensation that strengthens cellular resilience and systemic function. This biological principle is fundamental to optimizing the body’s adaptive capacity.
