Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid, an intermediate product formed during the metabolism of methionine, an essential dietary amino acid. It is not incorporated into proteins. Instead, it is typically recycled back to methionine or converted into cysteine through specific biochemical reactions.

Context

This amino acid plays a central role in the one-carbon metabolic cycle, a critical pathway for cellular function. Its metabolism depends on adequate specific B vitamins, namely folate (B9), vitamin B12, and vitamin B6, which act as cofactors for involved enzymes. Without these vitamins, homocysteine cannot be properly processed.

Significance

Elevated homocysteine levels in the blood, known as hyperhomocysteinemia, are recognized as an independent risk factor for adverse health outcomes.
