Homeostasis

Meaning

Homeostasis is the fundamental physiological property of a living system to actively maintain a relatively stable, internal equilibrium despite continuous fluctuations in the external environment. This dynamic steady state is achieved through a complex network of interconnected regulatory mechanisms, ensuring optimal conditions for cellular function and survival. Critical parameters maintained by homeostasis include body temperature, blood glucose levels, pH, and hormonal concentrations. Clinical health is essentially a reflection of successful, robust homeostatic regulation across all major organ systems.
