HMG-CoA Reductase

Meaning

HMG-CoA Reductase, formally known as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, is the rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway, which is the principal metabolic route for cholesterol synthesis within the body. This enzyme is a major regulatory point in lipid metabolism and is the primary molecular target for statin drugs, which are widely used to manage hypercholesterolemia. Its activity is tightly regulated by cellular cholesterol levels and hormonal signals.
