HLA Alleles

Meaning

HLA Alleles are specific, distinct variants of the Human Leukocyte Antigen genes, which encode proteins found on the surface of most nucleated cells, playing a critical role in immune system regulation and the recognition of self versus non-self. These highly polymorphic genes are instrumental in determining an individual’s immune response to various pathogens and are essential for tissue compatibility. In the wellness context, certain HLA types are genetically linked to susceptibility or resistance to specific autoimmune endocrine disorders, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
