HIV Lipodystrophy

Meaning

HIV lipodystrophy describes a syndrome characterized by significant alterations in body fat distribution, often accompanied by metabolic abnormalities, observed in individuals living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, particularly those receiving antiretroviral therapy. This condition typically involves a combination of lipoatrophy, which is the loss of subcutaneous fat in areas such as the face, limbs, and buttocks, and lipohypertrophy, which manifests as fat accumulation in specific regions like the abdomen, breasts, or dorsocervical area, commonly known as a buffalo hump.
