HIV-Associated Lipodystrophy

Meaning

HIV-Associated Lipodystrophy is a complex metabolic syndrome characterized by a significant, abnormal redistribution of body fat, often accompanied by dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, occurring in individuals with HIV infection. This condition manifests as either lipoatrophy, the loss of subcutaneous fat, or lipohypertrophy, the accumulation of visceral or dorsal fat, severely impacting body image and cardiovascular wellness. It represents a chronic, multi-systemic complication of both the viral infection and its historical antiretroviral treatments.
