HITECH Act

Meaning

The HITECH Act, formally known as the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, is a significant piece of United States legislation enacted in 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Its core objective is to stimulate the adoption and “meaningful use” of health information technology, particularly electronic health records (EHRs), across the healthcare system. This act simultaneously reinforces and expands the privacy and security provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), specifically addressing the electronic exchange of protected health information.
