Hippocampal Function Sleep

Meaning

The critical and specialized function of sleep, particularly the non-REM Slow-Wave Sleep (SWS) and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stages, in modulating the structure, integrity, and performance of the Hippocampus. This temporal lobe structure is a key brain region essential for the initial encoding and consolidation of new episodic and spatial memories. Optimal sleep architecture is required for the hippocampus to effectively engage in synaptic plasticity and efficiently transfer information to long-term cortical storage.
