HIPAA HITECH Act

Meaning

The HIPAA HITECH Act refers to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 as significantly modified and strengthened by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009. HITECH expanded the scope of HIPAA’s security and privacy rules, notably by applying them directly to Business Associates of covered entities and by establishing stricter breach notification requirements. This combined legislation forms the foundational legal framework for protecting electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) in the United States. Compliance is essential for any clinical practice handling sensitive patient hormonal and biomarker data.
