High Hematocrit

Meaning

High hematocrit, clinically termed polycythemia or erythrocytosis, refers to an abnormally elevated percentage of red blood cells in the total blood volume, exceeding established reference ranges for a given sex. This condition signifies an increased red cell mass, leading to thicker, more viscous blood, which can impede capillary blood flow and increase the risk of thrombotic events such as stroke or deep vein thrombosis. In the context of hormonal health, it is a recognized, dose-dependent side effect of exogenous testosterone administration.
