High-Density Lipoprotein Levels

Meaning

This is a clinical measure of the concentration of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles circulating in the plasma, commonly known as “good cholesterol.” HDL functions critically in reverse cholesterol transport, removing excess cholesterol from peripheral tissues and delivering it back to the liver for excretion or reprocessing. Higher levels are generally associated with a reduced risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. However, the functionality of the HDL particle, not just its concentration, is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of its protective capacity.
