Heterologous Desensitization

Meaning

Heterologous desensitization describes a physiological phenomenon where prolonged or intense exposure to an agonist reduces the responsiveness of a cell or tissue to a subsequent stimulation by a different agonist, acting through an unrelated receptor. This differs from homologous desensitization, which specifically involves the downregulation of the receptor directly activated by the initial stimulus. It signifies a broader cellular adaptation, impacting multiple signaling pathways simultaneously.
