HERS Trial

Meaning

HERS Trial is the acronym for the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study, a landmark randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. This study was specifically designed to investigate the effect of combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on the secondary prevention of recurrent coronary heart disease (CHD) in postmenopausal women who already had established CHD. It was one of the first large-scale, rigorous trials to assess the complex cardiovascular risks and potential benefits of combined estrogen and progestin therapy. The definitive findings of the HERS Trial significantly influenced and reshaped clinical guidelines for postmenopausal hormone use worldwide.
