Meaning

Hepcidin is a small, 25-amino acid peptide hormone primarily synthesized and secreted by hepatocytes in the liver, functioning as the central, negative master regulator of systemic iron homeostasis by controlling the absorption of dietary iron and its mobilization from cellular storage sites. Its clinical significance is derived from its dual role as a hormone and an acute-phase reactant; elevated hepcidin levels, often triggered by chronic inflammation or infection, lead to functional iron deficiency by trapping iron within macrophages and enterocytes. Conversely, inappropriately low hepcidin levels can result in dangerous systemic iron overload. This hormone provides a crucial, direct molecular link between the body’s inflammatory status and its iron metabolism, directly impacting erythropoiesis and cellular energy production.
