Hepatocellular Injury

Meaning

Hepatocellular injury is the pathological term for damage or destruction occurring to the hepatocytes, which are the main functional cells of the liver parenchyma. Clinically, this injury is often detected by elevated levels of liver-specific enzymes, such as alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, in the peripheral blood. The integrity of these cells is crucial, as the liver performs vital endocrine, metabolic, and detoxification roles for the entire body.
