Hepatic SHBG Production

Meaning

Hepatic SHBG Production describes the synthesis and secretion of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) primarily by the hepatocytes, or parenchymal cells, of the liver into the systemic bloodstream. SHBG is a critical glycoprotein that avidly binds to sex steroids, notably testosterone and estradiol, effectively regulating their circulating levels and determining the fraction that remains free and biologically active. The liver’s production rate of this protein is a major factor influencing the bioavailability of endogenous sex hormones.
