Hepatic Lipase

Meaning

Hepatic lipase (HL) is a key enzyme primarily expressed on the surface of liver cells and the endothelial lining of liver capillaries, playing a critical role in lipid metabolism. Its primary physiological function is the hydrolysis of triglycerides and phospholipids contained within circulating lipoproteins, particularly intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Clinically, the activity of HL significantly influences the concentration and composition of cholesterol, acting as a determinant in the process of reverse cholesterol transport and subsequent cardiovascular risk.
