Hepatic Insulin Clearance

Meaning

Hepatic Insulin Clearance is the essential physiological process by which the liver actively removes insulin from the portal circulation before the hormone can enter the systemic bloodstream. As the primary site of insulin degradation, the liver typically clears a substantial fraction, ranging from 50% to 80%, of the insulin secreted by the pancreatic beta cells in a single pass. This clearance rate is a crucial determinant of the peripheral circulating insulin concentration and is absolutely integral to the maintenance of systemic glucose homeostasis.
