Hepatic Enzymes

Meaning

Hepatic enzymes are a diverse group of proteins, primarily located within the liver cells (hepatocytes), that catalyze a vast array of biochemical reactions essential for metabolism, detoxification, and synthesis. Clinically, specific enzymes like the transaminases (ALT, AST) are measured as biomarkers of liver health, while the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system enzymes are critical for the metabolism and clearance of hormones and xenobiotics. Their collective function is central to maintaining systemic hormonal balance and drug efficacy.
