Hepatic Clearance

Meaning

Hepatic Clearance is a pharmacokinetic measure quantifying the liver’s efficiency in removing a substance, such as a hormone or drug, from the circulating blood plasma over a given time period. This critical physiological process determines the systemic bioavailability and half-life of many endogenous and exogenous compounds. A reduced clearance rate can lead to elevated plasma concentrations, potentially increasing the compound’s biological effect or toxicity. Conversely, enhanced clearance may necessitate higher dosing for therapeutic effectiveness.
