Hemostasis

Meaning

Hemostasis is the complex, finely regulated physiological process by which the body spontaneously stops blood loss from a damaged blood vessel while simultaneously maintaining normal, unobstructed blood flow within the rest of the circulatory system. This essential, life-saving mechanism involves a coordinated sequence of local vascular constriction, rapid platelet plug formation, and the intricate activation of the coagulation cascade, ultimately forming a stable fibrin clot. In the context of hormonal health, various circulating hormones, including estrogen and cortisol, can significantly modulate the activity of coagulation factors and platelet function.
