Hemoglobin A1c

Meaning

Hemoglobin A1c, often abbreviated as HbA1c or A1c, is a clinically significant blood test that provides an average measure of plasma glucose concentration over the preceding two to three months. It quantifies the percentage of hemoglobin molecules in red blood cells that have undergone glycation, a non-enzymatic attachment of glucose. This metric is the gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring long-term glycemic control in patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes.
