Hemoglobin

Meaning

The critical metalloprotein contained within red blood cells (erythrocytes) that is fundamentally responsible for the transport of oxygen from the pulmonary circulation to the body’s peripheral tissues and the efficient return of carbon dioxide. Hemoglobin’s concentration and saturation in the peripheral blood serve as a key clinical metric, accurately reflecting the overall oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and providing essential diagnostic information regarding conditions like anemia or polycythemia. Hormonal factors, notably androgens, can directly influence its production through their stimulatory effects on erythropoiesis.
